CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“That bitch!”

Agatha only barely managed to set the enchanted mirror down on her vanity before screaming and knocking an entire bookshelf over. The wood cracked as it hit the stone floor of her room, the sound echoing off the walls.

“How the hell did she survive?”

The Grand Godmother fumed as she paced back and forth. Magic tingled in her palms, itching for her to channel it through her wand to destroy something. If she didn’t soon, she worried she might actually lose her mind.

“Grand Godmother?” came a meek voice just outside her door. A soft knock soon accompanied it. “Is everything okay?”

Agatha’s eyes closed, her nostrils flaring as she struggled to get herself under control. “I’m fine, Victoria. Could you send Marilyn in here, please?”

“Yes, Grand Godmother.”

Agatha could hear the young fairy’s feet pounding away as she ran to get one of the Elder fairy’s most trusted confidants. She’d been with Agatha nearly since the beginning.

Another knock came at the door, this one much firmer. “Agatha.”

“Come in.”

Marilyn walked in and closed the door behind her, using her wand to create a barrier around the room to conceal their conversation.

“What is it?”

Agatha sighed heavily through her nose as she turned to face her great-great grandniece. No one knew how closely related they were or how old. If anyone discovered the truth, there would be questions. Questions the Grand Godmother was sure she wouldn’t be able to answer without revealing her treachery.

After she’d killed her entire immediate family, Agatha had gone into hiding for a couple of centuries. The All-World had cut her off from the pool of energy all fairies powershared from. What she didn’t know at the time, because she’d sequestered herself so well that no fairy could find her, was that all fairies had paid for her betrayal.

Agatha had no idea the cave had that level of autonomy. She wrongly believed it was a creation made by the Guardians and, therefore, under their entire control. She believed it served all fairies.

That couldn’t have been further from the truth.

It was a living, breathing being all on its own. It possessed its own magic aside from the power it held and protected for fairy-kind. More than that, it was capable of making its own judgments and decisions.

And it had judged her as guilty of treason and stripped her of her birthright. Not just her, but all fairies below Guardian status. That meant fairies would forever have a finite level of magic that was based solely on their own age, strength, dedication, and time spent practicing and growing it. Fairies could no longer powershare, and therefore, must rely on others.

After a few centuries spent in solitude with no one to talk to other than the humans she was meant to serve, Agatha took a long, hard look at her circumstances. She’d hungered for power and made the move she thought would mean her success, but instead, it cost her everything. It didn’t take her long to realize a fairy’s strength was then in numbers.
